From Caregiver Chaos to Clarity: Essential Resources for Bay Area Families Facing Alzheimer's
As adult children, many of us in the Bay Area — especially those juggling life across Contra Costa, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, Solano, and Napa counties — find ourselves squarely in the sandwich generation.
We are balancing demanding careers, caring for our kids, and navigating the increasingly complex needs of our aging parents. This journey often involves managing monumental tasks like downsizing, selling the family home, and, most importantly, choosing the right care options.
To make these conversations easier, the Simplify Senior Transitions Podcast brings you real stories and expert insights. In this episode, we welcome Zack Suggs, Senior Director of the Walk to End Alzheimer's at the Alzheimer’s Association.
Zack's career is built at the intersection of healthcare and advocacy, rallying communities to raise awareness, fund research, and build crucial connections. His insights are vital for any family dealing with the emotional and logistical reality of cognitive decline.
Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode
The critical distinction between dementia (an umbrella term) and Alzheimer’s disease, which is not a normal part of aging.
The profound physical and emotional toll that caregiving takes on adult children — and the importance of finding support.
Immediate, free, 24/7 resources available to Bay Area families dealing with a new diagnosis or emotional crisis.
Why early detection is more crucial now than ever to access emerging treatments.
How the Walk to End Alzheimer's serves as the largest support group of the year and connects thousands of people fighting this disease.
Alzheimer's: Understanding the Landscape in California
Alzheimer’s disease impacts millions of families nationwide. Dementia is a broad, umbrella term for cognitive changes, and Alzheimer’s is the most common form — accounting for 60 to 80% of all dementia cases.
One of the biggest misconceptions families hear is that Alzheimer’s is simply a part of normal aging. Zack stresses that this is absolutely false — it is a disease. While age is the biggest risk factor, it is truly a condition that affects your ability to operate in day-to-day life.
The numbers here in California are sobering: about 720,000 individuals are currently living with the disease. This staggering incidence is expected to grow in the coming years. Given that many senior living transitions are prompted by advancing dementia, seeking clarity and resources early is essential for making informed choices about care.
Prioritizing Caregiver Well-being and Managing Emotional Stress
When a parent needs advanced care, the resulting stress on the adult child — the caregiver — is tremendous.
Right now, about six in ten caregivers are employed full-time. If you are part of the sandwich generation, caring for both your kids and your parents, you can quickly find yourself burning your candle from both ends.
This leads to substantial health impacts and intense emotional patterns like guilt, fear, and denial.
Zack emphasizes that caregivers must have an intentional plan to reset and recharge. Whether that means calling a trusted family member to step away for just ten minutes or utilizing paid professional respite care, finding time for yourself is critical.
Your Local Lifeline: Free Resources for Support and Care Options
When you receive a diagnosis and your world pauses, knowing where to turn for help is vital. The Alzheimer’s Association provides tremendous resources free of charge.
One of the most utilized resources nationwide is the 24/7 Helpline: 800-272-3900. Day or night, a master’s level clinician is there to pick up the phone — whether you’re in San Jose or halfway across the country.
This helpline is available in over 200 languages and can connect you with local services, a physician, or simply provide advice during a 2 a.m. caregiver crisis.
Additionally, the Association offers Care Consultations. Staff can sit down with a family, caregiver, or someone in the early stages of Alzheimer’s and help them formulate a personalized action plan.
Finding Hope and Connection Through Advocacy
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which recently saw over 2,500 people gather in Silicon Valley, is the world’s largest fundraiser for care, support, and research.
More than the money, the Walk is a powerful, emotional experience — often described as the biggest support group of the year — bringing together people who “just kind of get it.”
Participants carry Promise Garden Flowers — Yellow for caregivers, Blue for those living with the disease, Purple for those who have lost someone, and Orange for supporters. This visual representation of connection provides immense power during this difficult journey.
Finally, Zack shares that we are at an incredible time of medical breakthroughs. In the last few years, the first treatments have emerged that change the underlying biology of Alzheimer’s — slowing disease progression and giving families more time.
Because these treatments are currently exclusive to the earliest stages, early detection is more critically important than ever before.
