An 80-year-old man in San Mateo attends a CBAS Center three days a week, getting exercise classes and nursing oversight for his diabetes, while his daughter can focus on work, knowing he’s safe. CBAS is a lifeline for families trying to balance work, caregiving, and their own health.

Navigating Assisted Living in the Bay Area (ALW and CalAIM)

For many families, the eventual need for assisted living triggers the difficult transition of selling a senior’s home. Historically, using Medi-Cal to cover assisted living costs was complex.

The ALW (Assisted Living Waiver) was groundbreaking in allowing Medi-Cal to pay for assisted living for low-income seniors who needed nursing home level care but could safely live in an assisted living environment. Counties like Alameda, Contra Costa, and Santa Clara participated early, giving local families access, though demand remained high.

Today, CalAIM (California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal) is expanding and integrating these supports statewide. CalAIM is absorbing and broadening programs like ALW, providing more consistent services, reducing wait lists, and offering broader access to assisted living coverage and housing supports.

This shift provides families who were once shut out due to county restrictions with new pathways to support.
